When one normally thinks of dorm food usually the response is “OH, THE HORROR!” We’ve all had our fair share of disgusting dorm food but after 3 years of consuming it I’ve learned a few tricks. Dorm food doesn’t always have to be drab, dingy or tasteless. There are many ways you can spice up your meal to make it as appetizing and savory as your mama’s cooking. It all starts with you surveying your options in your cafeteria. Just take a look at each food bar and do some experimenting, it’s all about creativity!
Let’s start with breakfast, you can make your own McGriddle in your cafeteria. Take the bagel of your choice and inside it put scrambled eggs, sausage, and bacon, if you want you can also throw some shredded cheese in there as well. Pretty easy, right? Now here’s one of my favorites, it’s a DIY spicy chicken sandwich I usually eat for lunch. You take a plain spicy chicken sandwich and dress it with whatever you want. Usually I put jalapenos, pickles, tomatoes, lettuce, cheese, and I top it off with marinara sauce from the pasta bar. And let me tell you, it taste the BOMB!
One more trick, if you’re in a hurry and don’t have time to sit down and eat, make your own parfait. Usually you can find all the ingredients you need where the bread and bagels are kept, if not check around the salad bar. All you have to do is get a cup and fill it with your choice of fruit, yogurt and granola. If granola isn’t available use cereal! It’s easy, simple and quick, not to mention tasty AND healthy.
Eating in the dorms doesn’t always have to be dreadful, work your magic and make your dining experience a pleasant one. Don’t let your dorm food discourage you, if you use your imagination you’ll find that you have endless possibilities before you.
